Farmer Giles of Ham
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins Publishers (23 August, 1990)
Authors: J.R.R. Tolkien and Roger Garland
Average review score:

Brilliant!
Farmer Giles of Ham is one of the best short stories I've ever read. It is about Giles, a Farmer from the village of Ham, who aquires Tailbiter, a magic sword, his talking dog (animals had speech way back then, you know), dragons, and giants. The whole thing has a wonderful humorous touch that I love. While this book isn't as monumental as The Lord of the Rings, I'm sure anyone will enjoy this book.

Fibonacci Fun
Wow! What a fun way to motivate kids about math and problem solving! I teach gifted and talented elementary school kids and they LOVE these problems. Started them out with the "bee family tree" and they were begging for more. This will be a staple in my classroom from now on!

Foxfire Book of Appalachian Cookery: Regional Memorabilia & Recipes (Foxfire)
Published in Paperback by E P Dutton (November, 1984)
Authors: Linda Garland Page and Eliot Wigginton
Average review score:

This is like sitting with great-grandma while she cooks
What makes this book so special is the narratives with each recipe. It is as though you are sitting in a West Virginia or Carolina kitchen with family long-gone, listening, as they tell how to make that special family recipe. As I have researched my family roots, I've often wished I could have known some of my ancestors from this part of the country, what their stories were, their everyday experiences. This book is a jewel and the recipes are absolute treasures. The memories it holds are a bit of disappearing Americana. This is comfort food at its best and a sampling of the simple lives and times that brought it to us. The canning recipes are some of the best you'll find anywhere. It even has recipes for squirrel, possum and other mountain delicacies that I've heard in family stories (but oooh, who'd want to eat them now?!) We've laughed and sighed as we poured over each page, each story. This will be a book you'll cherish.

A Gallery of Her Own: An Annotated Bibliography of Women in Victorian Painting (Garland Reference Library of the Humanities, Vol 1414)
Published in Hardcover by Garland Pub (May, 1997)
Authors: Elree I. Harris and Shirley R. Scott
Average review score:

Lost Art
I first looked at this book because I had some old paintings
that I found in antique shop. They were signed by women, but I
couldn't find anything about who they were. In this book, I
found not only the names, but personal information about the artists, what had been written about them during their lifetimes,
and some scholarly, but very clear and interesting commentary
about women who painted in Victorian times and what their lives
and careers were like. It turned out that one of my paintings
is fairly valuable (I went to an art dealer knowing what I had!) but after I found out about the artist I liked the painting even more and wouldn't part with it. So the book was cheap at the price, and now is an important part of my antique-hunting library.

The Game of Life
Published in Paperback by Random House (Merchandising) (April, 1991)
Authors: Norma Howe and Michael Garland
Average review score:

spectacular
Life. What is the meaning and purpose of life? This book managed to answer this question with one sentence.
Cairo is an ordinary teenager living in the world of reality. She goes through her 16th year with the memory of an incident of a blender and strawberries. Using this one incident, the whole randomness of life is slowly revealed to us. Through many happenings, Cairo realizes that nothing can be helped, nothing is predestined. Whatever happens just happens, and there is no way to change the past.
This is a delirious and light read, but if you think about it afterwards, it's one of those "iceburg" books. There's so much more beneath the surface. Dig deeper. I won't keep you here any longer, go READ.

Garland for the Girls
Published in Hardcover by Grosset & Dunlap (June, 1971)
Author: Louisa May Alcott
Average review score:

Marvelous, wholesome reading
I read Garland for Girls last summer for the first time, once again enjoying another one of LMA's books! Each chapter is a different story, filled with good old-fashioned piety and lovely story lines so absent from modern books for girls. As a young adult, as well as a teacher and mentor of young girls, I highly recommend LMA's Garland for Girls.

Published in Paperback by Conari Pr (February, 1992)
Author: Daphne Rose Kingma
Average review score:

Focusing Each Day
As a single mother, it is sometimes hard for me to remember to love those who are most important to me, including myself. I use this book to give each day a theme, to remind myself what is important, and to not forget the little things along the way. Daphne Rose Kingma has written a book that is as much a collection of affirmations as it is a daily hug, and who doesn't need a hug each and every day?
